Federal Fair Housing Act
The Fair Housing Act (Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as amended) prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, and familial status. This applies to all aspects of the housing process, including advertising, showing properties, screening tenants, setting terms and conditions, and providing services.
Texas Fair Housing Act
The Texas Fair Housing Act (Chapter 301 of the Texas Property Code) mirrors federal protections and is enforced by the Texas Workforce Commission Civil Rights Division. Texas law provides additional protections for veterans and members of the military.
